North Windships Welcomes Dr. Martina Vilanova Reche as Technical Manager Following Successful PhD on Wind Propulsion for Commercial Shipping
North Windships is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Martina Vilanova Reche as Technical Manager. Martina rejoins the company after successfully completing her PhD research on wind propulsion systems for commercial ships, conducted in close collaboration with North Windships and the North Technology Group over the past three years.
A qualified naval architect with a lifelong passion for sailing, Martina dedicated her doctoral research to the study of wind-assisted propulsion technologies as a pathway to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions in shipping. Her work bridges advanced naval architecture with the IMO and EU mandated need for emissions reductions in the commercial shipping sector, underlining her commitment to addressing the climate challenge through innovation.
“As a naval architect with a strong awareness of the climate challenge, my PhD on wind propulsion systems was a natural choice, a way to combine my professional skills with my lifelong love for sailing,” said Martina. “Partnering with the North Technology Group was also obvious to me, as it has always been a source of inspiration and a leader in sailing innovation.”
In her new role, Martina will focus on supporting shipowners, naval architects, ship operators, and regulators in assessing and implementing wind propulsion solutions. Her goal is to accelerate shipping’s decarbonisation pathway by demonstrating the economic and environmental benefits of wind technologies.
She added: “The maritime sector is undergoing a real transformation, driven by digitalisation, decarbonisation, and automation. It is an incredibly exciting time to be part of this change, and I am eager to support shipowners and operators in embracing wind propulsion as a reliable and future-proof solution.”
North Windships is proud to welcome Martina back into the team. Her expertise and vision will play a central role in advancing our mission to position wind propulsion at the heart of shipping’s decarbonisation journey.
