The vision

Vela was conceived as the next evolution in sustainable superyacht design—an ultra-luxury vessel powered primarily by wind, leveraging cutting-edge DynaRig technology. As the yachting world looks to a greener future, Vela sets out to prove that performance, elegance, and environmental responsibility can co-exist at the highest level.

Engineering the DynaRig Advantage

Southern Spars, the world leader in composite rigging solutions, was selected to deliver the custom-engineered DynaRig system for Vela. The DynaRig, originally developed for Maltese Falcon, is now reimagined with more advanced materials, automation, and energy efficiency.
Automation & Control: The DynaRig enables fully automated sail deployment and trimming, operated at the touch of a button.
Energy Efficiency: With no need for winches or halyards, and reduced crew demands, the system minimises energy consumption while maximising power from the wind.
Performance: The unique rig configuration allows for optimal aerodynamic performance, providing smooth handling and high average speeds on long voyages.

Sustainability by Design

Every aspect of Vela is designed to reduce her environmental footprint:
Wind as Primary Propulsion: DynaRig technology enables extended periods of silent, engine-free cruising.
Hybrid Systems: Integrated hybrid propulsion supports zero-emissions manoeuvring and power generation.
Recyclable Composites: Southern Spars employed recyclable prepreg carbon materials in key structural components of the rig system.

Challenges and Innovation

Rigging a DynaRig for a modern luxury yacht presents unique challenges:
Structural Integration: Seamless collaboration with the naval architect ensured mast placement and load distribution aligned with the yacht’s interior and exterior design.
Aesthetic Engineering: The rig’s profile had to align with Vela's sleek Vitruvius-designed silhouette—requiring engineering solutions that were both functional and beautiful.
Future-Proofing: Southern Spars integrated modular systems that allow for future upgrades in sail technology, energy storage, and control systems

A Symbol of the Future

While still in development, Vela represents a pivotal shift in superyacht thinking. She is more than a concept—she is a movement toward elegant, responsible design powered by one of the oldest forces known to humanity: the wind.
As the marine industry accelerates its journey toward decarbonisation, Vela and the DynaRig stand at the forefront—proving that the future of yachting is not just sustainable, but also sensational.
